"I thought we played really well tonight," said Wellston head coach Hilary Nichols. "Our back row stepped it up after the first set. They were slow getting started, but they started moving well off their blocks and tracking the ball, which is something we worked on in practice. Also, our front row stepped it up, and Tressa had another great game for us."
Overall, Coach Nichols felt her team starting to gel after switching their rotation at Meigs on Tuesday night.
"We stayed in the same rotation tonight, and I think this is the one," she said. "We are finally coming together, and I think we have figured out how to play with each other and be successful."
The Lady Rockets fell behind to start the match but went up 16-10 after a 10-4 run. Belpre responded with an 8-2 run to tie the score at 18-18, but kills by Lambert and Henry, followed by three errors by the Lady Eagles, and a kill by Molly Smith ended the first set in Wellston's favor, 25-21.
With the second set tied 4-4, Wellston scored 10 unanswered points, which featured three kills by Lambert for a 14-9 lead. The Lady Rockets did not relinquish their advantage from there, cruising to a 25-17 victory.
In the third set, Wellston sprinted to an 11-9 lead, and then Belpre strung together four unanswered points to gain a 13-11 advantage before the Lady Rockets knotted it at 13-13. Wellston went on to secure 12 of the last 15 points to take the set and the match, 25-16.
Wellston returns to the court for a pair of TVC-Ohio Division matches next week. The Lady Rockets face Athens on Tuesday, before getting back on the road Thursday at Alexander.
