Semi driver dies in fiery crash on U.S. 35 in Gallia CountyFree Access

A major crash in Gallia County involving two semi-tractor-trailer rigs took the life of one of the drivers and closed a busy section of U.S. Route 35 for much of the day on Wednesday, Dec. 18.

According to the Gallipolis Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), the two-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 10:41 a.m. on U.S. Route 35 near the roadside rest area, which is approximately two miles east of Rio Grande.

The OSHP news release stated that a 2015 model Kenworth semi-tractor-trailer being driven westbound by Davis Winslow, 45, of Portsmouth, Virginia when it was struck in the rear by a westbound 2024 model Volvo semi-tractor-trailer driven by Jason Roaden, 54 of Fairfield, Ohio.  

Rhoaden’s rig traveled off the roadway and became fully engulfed in flames and overturned on to its side. Rhoaden was pronounced dead at the scene by the Gallia County Coroner. Winslow was not injured. The crash remains under investigation but troopers reported that Rhoaden failed to maintain assured clear distance.

Assisting OSHP troopers at the scene were the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office, the Gallia County Ohio Department of Transportation, the Gallia County EMS and the Springfield Township Fire Department.
