The 2020 Memorial Day actitivies set for this coming Monday at the Vinton County Courthouse, Elk Cemetery and the Village of Hamden have all been canceled, due to the coronavirus situation and the state’s Stay-at-Home order.

Vinton County Veterans Services Officer Tim Reid told The Telegram the activities in McArthur have been canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Traditionally, there is a performance from the Vinton County High School Band, remarks from one of the county’s judges or guest speakers; the reading of the county’s war-dead and a 21-gun salute. There is usually a small Memorial Day Parade as well. Reid stated he regretted having to make this decision and hopes to have a Veterans Day Program when November rolls around.

In Hamden, Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jason Potts stated that Hamden has also canceled Memorial Day activities plans due to COVID-19. Normally, the village has a large parade through town and events at the Hamden Cemetery, as well as a 21-gun salute in remembrance of the war dead.
