The Vinton County Junior Fair is ready to begin its eight-day run, beginning Saturday, July 24 at 7 p.m. with the Queens Contest at the Terry Fout Memorial Stage.

Three young ladies will be competing for the crown, while others will be competing for grade-level attendant honors in the grades 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8 categories.  The event is returning after a one-year absence due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

Since the June 2019 Fair ended, several physical improvements have been made to the fairgrounds. One of those projects is the reconditioning of the Fern Kruger Memorial Building. According to Fair Board President Austin Owings, the building has received a major detail cleaning and paint job, and a new floor has been installed. The building also contains the Fair Board office.

Another building improvement has been Mullins Pizza’s fairgrounds location, which was at one time the former 4H/FFA booth. Mullins Pizza owner JC Mullins has enclosed the building, added air-conditioning, and provided both inside and outside dining options. Many of the offerings there will be the same as those at their Market Street location in McArthur. Mullins Pizza at the fairgrounds will not only be open during the fair but also during many of the other major events held there during the year.

The fair also has a big lineup, including a Demolition Derby on Tuesday night, July 27. On Friday, July 30 there is a Livestock Auction beginning at 5 p.m. with 4-H and FFA students placed in the spotlight. There will also be a Fireworks Show, which will be held immediately following the Auction. On Saturday, July 31, there is a Truck and Tractor Pull at 7 p.m., along with a Dog Show, at noon.
