This week in Farm & Forest, I am going to bring to attention some upcoming events that are happening in the area:

A Day in the Woods – “Identifying the Trees in Your Woods” – Friday, Aug. 12. This program will go through the basic methods of tree species identification by leaf type. The event is hosted by OSU Extension and will take place at the Vinton Furnace State Forest from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The cost is $12 per person (meal included). Tomato Technologies for Tomorrow – Tuesday, Aug. 16. A field night meant for commercial growers and home tomato growers. This program will introduce new methods of fertilization, irrigation, etc. It also includes a tour of OSU South Centers field trials. It will take place at OSU South Centers Research and Extension Building from 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. and the cost is $20 (meal included). Register online at by Friday, Aug. 12.

Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) – Thursday, Aug. 18. BQA is a program meant to increase the competitive base for marketing Ohio cattle by ensuring safe and wholesome management of beef and dairy cattle. It is hosted by OSU Extension and will take place at the Pike County Fairgrounds from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Free for Jackson/Vinton/Pike/Scioto County Farm Bureau members and $5 for others (meal included). Wild Turkey Habitat Workshop for Private Landowners – Tuesday, Aug. 30. Are you a private landowner interested in attracting wild turkey to your property? Join wildlife professionals for dinner and a discussion on habitat needs and how to manage your property for wild turkey. This program is provided by OSU and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. It will take place from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Athens Community Center and the cost is $15 (meal included). Register by Tuesday, Aug. 23 at
