Construction is underway at what will be the new Goodwill Store in McArthur. The new location is in the Cherry Lane Retail Center located just behind Campbell’s Market. Goodwill is the third business to buy land in the development and will be the second business to locate there.

Goodwill is currently operating at 574 N. Market St. and will remain there until the move is completed. Goodwill is a nationally known chain and has 2,800 locations in the U.S., Canada, and other countries. Their stores offer a diverse amount of clothing, electronics and household items at discount prices.

According to the company’s website, their mission statement is, “Goodwill works to enhance people’s dignity and quality of life by strengthening their communities, eliminating their barriers to opportunity, and helping them reach their full potential through learning and the power of work.”

Goodwill was founded in Boston by Reverend Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister, and early social innovator. Helms created the Goodwill philosophy of “not charity, but a chance” when he collected used household goods and clothing in wealthier areas of the city. He then trained and hired people to mend and repair the used goods, which were then sold or given to the people who repaired them. Goodwill remains a household name today as a leading nonprofit provider of educational and workforce-related services, more than 118 years later.

The construction of the new Goodwill store also means another large business is moving to the growing west side of McArthur. Cherry Lane Retail Developer, Emmett Conway, Jr., has also sold land to the University of Rio Grande for the construction of a new McArthur campus. Recently, University of Rio Grant President Ryan Smith announced they are looking to partner with the Vinton County Local Schools (for new administrative offices) and the Holzer Health System staff for a clinic to be added onto the building.
