The Vinton County Local Schools Board of Education dealt with many personnel and policy decisions when meeting Monday evening, Nov. 15 at the District Office.

In personnel matters, the board hired Jake Brown as the new head baseball coach for the 2022 season. He will be replacing Andrew Barrell who resigned recently. (A separate story on this matter will appear in an upcoming issue). The Board also employed Tara Brewer as a certified tutor for the remainder of the year, and accepted Andrea Caudill’s request for medical/disability-related leave with a planned return to work in March.

In policy matters, the board:

* Approved an eighth-grade field trip to Gettysburg, Harrisburg and Hershey, Pennsylvania on May 26-28.

* Allowed Vinton County Middle School Assistant Principal Sara Henneman to transport students in her own private vehicle.

* Approved creating an Intervention Resource Room at West Elementary School, while also creating a new teaching and aide position. Superintendent Rick Brooks explained these rooms already exist at Central and South Elementary School and the addition will make the elementary schools uniform.

* Approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Franklin University’s School of Education for the purpose of providing teaching candidates for the district.

The Board has chosen not to schedule a regular meeting for December but reserves the right to call a special one if needed. The next regular meeting of the Board is set for Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. There will be an alternate date of Jan. 12 if the meeting is canceled because of adverse weather. Additionally, at the first meeting of 2022, new members Laura Martin and Scarlet Newton will be sworn in, and new Board officers will be selected. Prior to that, a tax budget hearing will be held.
