WELLSTON – The Wellston volleyball team suffered its fifth-straight loss after falling in straight sets against Athens in Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division play, 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-20), on Thursday night.

The Lady Rockets (3-5, 0-4 TVC-Ohio) got good production from junior outside hitter Sadie Henry, who finished with a team-leading 11 kills on .100 hitting. Middle hitter Taylar Spencer followed close behind with seven kills.

Defensively for Wellston, junior setter Kamryn Karr finished with 22 assists, two solo blocks, and four kills, and had a team-leading 12 digs, while Henry had 11 digs, and Jasmyne Mohler had eight. Libero Emma Ingalls finished with six digs for the Lady Rockets.

The contest was close throughout, as the conference foes battled through 16 ties and nine lead changes during the three-set match.

There were seven ties and three lead changes in a back-and-forth opening set, as Wellston came up just short, 25-21. Henry was impressive offensively, knocking down six kills on 11 swings to hit .272, while Athens capitalized on six ace serves to go along with 10 Wellston errors.

The second set was similar to the first, especially at the start, with seven ties and five lead changes. With the set even at 9-9, Athens used a 16-6 run to win 25-15, and take a 2-0 lead. The Lady Bulldogs benefitted from Wellston errors, which resulted in 15 free points during the set.

The Lady Rockets put up a fight in the third set, coming within two, at 20-18 after an Athens hitting error. However, the Lady Bulldogs finished with a 5-2 run to win the set and match, 25-20.

Wellston will travel to Nelsonville-York to face the Buckeyes in a TVC-Ohio Division match on Tuesday, before returning home on Thursday to host New Hope Academy in a non-conference match.
