WELLSTON – The Wellston Lady Rockets played well in spots against visiting Alexander but could not avoid a 3-0 setback (21-25, 16-25, 18-25) in a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division volleyball match on Thursday. The Lady Rockets are now 8-11 on the season and 2-8 in the Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division. The win boosts the Lady Spartans record to 7-11 and 5-4 in conference play.

Wellston kept within striking distance in all three sets, but the Lady Spartans capitalized on errors by the Lady Rockets. They also had timely runs and a tight defense to help key the win.

Unofficially, Sadie Henry posted a team-high five kills to go along with two service aces for the match.

Kamryn Karr and Kloey Pennington had four kills apiece, while Nevaeh Ousley had three for the Lady Rockets.

Conversely, Alexis Grissett had a match-high nine kills and Macey Jordan added eight to pace the Lady Spartans. As a team, Alexander finished with 27 kills for the match on 93 attempts and hit .161. They also had eight service aces, one block and 45 digs.

There were nine ties and six lead changes in the first set before Alexander used a 3-1 run to take a 15-13 lead. The Lady Spartans led by as many as seven at 23-16 before Wellston pulled to within 23-20. Alexander, though, scored two of the final three points for the 25-21 win.

After falling behind 12-4 in the second set, the Lady Rockets fashioned a 6-3 run to trim the margin to five at 15-10. Wellston was able to take advantage of a service error and two attack errors by Alexander during that stretch, while Macie Lambert had a service ace. The Lady Spartans increased their lead to nine at 20-11 and closed out the set with a 25-16 victory.

There were five ties in the third set, as neither team could seize the upper hand. Tied at 15-all, Alexander pulled away with a 6-2 run, and the Lady Rockets could not recover, as the Lady Spartans uncorked a 5-1 run to secure the set and the match.

The Lady Rockets will host South Gallia in a non-league match on Monday. They close out their home schedule on Tuesday in a TVC-Ohio Division matchup against Meigs before going to Nelsonville-York on Thursday.

On Tuesday, Oct. 5, the Lady Rockets lost on the road against Athens in straight sets (19-25, 13-25, 19-25) in a TVC-Ohio Division volleyball match. No statistics were available at press time.
