NELSONVILLE – Sparked by a five-run second inning, carried by good pitching from Brock Eggers and Zach Wilbur, the Wellston Golden Rockets completed the season sweep over the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes, 10-6, in a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division baseball game on Wednesday.

Eggers posted six strikeouts in 5.1 innings en route to the victory for the Rockets. The right-handed senior yielded six runs, five earned, on seven hits.

Wilbur, who relieved Eggers in the sixth inning, was almost untouchable as he tossed 1.2 innings of one-hit baseball while striking out three to earn the save.

Wellston had three players finish with multiple hits, including Chase Ingalls, who went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, highlighted by a three-run triple in the top of the second inning. In addition, Josh Jackson (2-for-4) scored a run, while Eggers (1-for-3) drove in a run and scored twice. Also, Pacey Rainer and Gage Downard each had one hit and one run scored apiece, while Jace McKenzie walked twice and scored one run.

Leading by a run heading into the seventh, Wellston added three runs for a four-run cushion. Jackson led off the inning with a single and Martin was hit by a pitch. Eggers then delivered with a one-out double to bring home Jackson. Fetherolf reached on a fielder’s choice, as Martin scored from third base, and Eggers crossed home plate on an error by the catcher.

In the bottom of the seventh, Nelsonville-York's lead-off batter reached on an error, before Wilbur struck out the next batter. After giving up a single, the next Nelsonville-York batter lined back to Wilbur, who threw it to first base for a game-ending double play.

With the win, the Rockets improved to 9-9 and are 4-5 in the TVC-Ohio Division standings.

Trailing 2-0 early, the Rockets sent eight batters to plate in the top of the second and broke the game open, scoring five runs on four hits. Eggers reached on a Nelsonville-York error and raced home on a single by Fetherolf. Wellston loaded the bases after McKenzie walked and Rainer singled.

Two batters later, Fetherolf, McKenzie, and Rainer touched home on a triple by Ingalls, who scored on the throw to give the Rockets a 5-2 lead.

Nelsonville-York narrowed the gap to 5-4, with two runs in the bottom of the third. The Rockets, however, responded with two runs of their own in the fourth. With one out, Josh Jackson flew out to right field, and Gage Downard advanced to third after tagging up, while Chase Ingalls went to second. Downard scored on an overthrow, and Ingalls moved to third.

Then Martin knocked in Ingalls with an RBI single up the middle for a 7-4 lead.

Nelsonville-York added single runs in the fourth and fifth before Wellston pulled away with a three-spot in the seventh.

The Rockets return to TVC-Ohio Division action against River Valley on Monday at Veterans Park.
