OAK HILL – The Oak Hill Oaks suffered a tough defeat to the Portsmouth West Senators, 62-37 in a SOC Division II boys’ basketball game on Friday night.

Oak Hill went ice cold in the fourth quarter, while Portsmouth West heated up, as the Senators dominated the Oaks, outscoring them 25-5 to pull away for the win.

“We didn’t practice for two days (leading up to the game), but at this point, conditioning shouldn’t be an issue,” said Oak Hill head coach Heath McKinniss. “I don’t think it was that, I think you worry about making shots and more than we need to.

“When you are getting the shots you want and they still are not going in, it makes you have to compete in every possession to stay in the game.”

Portsmouth West scored the opening points of the game on a putback basket and finished with a 14-11 run to end the first quarter.

The Senators got off to a good start in the second quarter, scoring the first six points to extend the lead to 20-11 with 6:07 to play. They followed with an 8-5 run to take a 12 point lead with 1:44 left, but Oak Hill’s Landon Hines made one-of-two free throws with 3.3 seconds left to cut the deficit to single digits, 29-20 at the half.

Trailing by 10 points with 4:55 left in the third quarter, the Oaks used a 7-2 run on baskets by Aidan Hall and Brock Harden, including a three-pointer by Garred Stiltner to close to within five points, 37-32, heading into the fourth quarter.

“We got it to 37-32 after three quarters and we knew one bucket would make it a one-possession game, but we just were not able to get it,” said McKinniss. “Our kids did a lot of things right tonight, but we can’t seem to get to a point where we can get that point to win a game.”

Oak Hill went ice cold in the fourth quarter, and Portsmouth West recorded a 12-0 run to push the lead to 17 points, 49-32 with 3:52 left. Harden temporarily stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer for the Oaks, but the Senators closed the game with a 13-2 run for the win.

Hall and Stiltner paced the Oaks with eight points each, while Braylon Howell finished with nine rebounds, to go along with seven points. Hines added five points, Johnnie Mullet had four, while Harden and Gavin Howell finished with three and two points, respectively.

Portsmouth West had three players finished in double-digits, led by Noah Coleman with 20 points. Luke Howard added 12 points and Rodney Moore had 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Senators shot 43.3 percent (26 of 50), including 42.9 percent (6 of 14) from the three-point range. Oak Hill shot 27.3 percent (15 of 55) and 20 percent (5 of 25) from beyond the three-point arc. Portsmouth West edged Oak Hill on the boards, outrebounding the Oaks 37-36 for the game.

Oak Hill will close out the regular season on the road at Eastern on Friday night.
