WELLSTON – The Wellston Lady Rockets closed out a three-game stand in four days with a 41-14 loss against Alexander in Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division action on Thursday night.

Kara Meeks scored the first points of the game for Alexander following the opening tip. From there, the Lady Spartans pushed their lead to 23-1, which stretched well into the second quarter.

Wellston snapped Alexander’s scoring streak with its first basket of the game by Lauren Cheatham with 2:30 left to play in the second quarter.

However, Alexander took a 27-5 lead into halftime following a 4-2 run to close the half.

The Lady Rockets struggled from the floor in the first half shooting just 12.5 percent (2 of 16) from the field, including 0 of 4 from three-point range. The Lady Spartans, meanwhile, shot 12 of 35 (34.2 percent) from the field, including 2 of 10 from beyond the arc in the first half.

The struggle continued for the Lady Rockets in the third quarter, as they shot 3-for-9 (33.3 percent) from the floor and were outscored 12-7 by the Lady Spartans to trail 39-12. Kimmie Aubrey and Cheatham scored a goal apiece during the period, while Jenna Johnston connected on a three-pointer.

There was very little offense from either team in the fourth quarter, as both teams scored two points each, solidifying Alexander’s 27-point win.

Cheatham, who was coming off a career-high 19 points and 21 rebounds against Nelsonville-York on Wednesday, paced the Lady Rockets with four points against Alexander. She also had nine rebounds, two blocked shots, and a steal.

In addition, Johnston grabbed eight rebounds to go along with three points for Wellston, while Jayla Sawyer added three points, and Kimmie Aubrey rounded out the scoring with two points.

Marlee Grinstead scored a game-high 12 points to lead Alexander, which improved to 8-1 on the season and 4-1 in TVC-Ohio Division play.

Wellston (1-4, 0-4 TVC-Ohio) returns to action in a TVC-Ohio Division makeup on Saturday at Athens. The Lady Rockets will host Western (Latham) in a varsity only contest on Wednesday, Jan. 13. Tip time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Junior Varsity Game: The Lady Rockets prevented the sweep, as the junior varsity squad captured a 12-11 victory.
