COAL GROVE – Wellston dug itself into a hole and couldn’t climb out against Coal Grove.

As much as the Lady Rockets (3-13) clawed and tried to fight its way back from a 15-point deficit in the first quarter, it only got worse.

The No. 28 seed Wellston – coming off a 10-day quarantine – lost to the No. 5 Lady Hornets 64-31 in a sectional semifinal in a Division III girls’ basketball game on Sunday evening.

Wellston was led by junior Jenna Johnston, who scored 14  points on 6 of 11 shooting with five rebounds and two assists. Lauren Cheatham was next in the scoring column for the Lady Rockets with five points, while Daycee Clemons had four points, and Emma Henry added three.

Also, Sarah Martin and Maddie Potts finished with two points each.

Trailing by 41 points at the end of the third quarter, Johnston scored eight of Wellston’s 10-2 run in the fourth quarter. After getting a rebound and putback basket, she hit two 3-pointers to narrow the Lady Rockets’ lead to 31 points with 2:25 left.

Wellston had no answer Addi Dillow, who dominated with 22 points for the Lady Hornets. Kaleigh Murphy added 18 points, while Abbey Hicks finished with 11, and Elli Holmes had 10.

Cheatham made 1 of 2 free throws to tie the game with 3:54 left in the first quarter.

From there, it was all Coal Grove (21-2), as Dillow scored eight points in a 15-0 run to close out the quarter.

She added six points to her total in the second quarter, as the Lady Hornets outscored Wellston 37-11 to take a 44-13 lead into halftime.

Coal Grove used an 18-10 run in the third quarter to lead by 41 points, 62-21.

With the win, Coal Grove advanced to the championship game on Wednesday and will host No. 12 seed Federal Hocking, who defeated No. 21 seed Piketon 70-52 on Saturday.

The Lady Rockets still have a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division makeup game scheduled against Nelsonville-York, which will take place on Wednesday. Tip time is 4 p.m.
