WELLSTON – Visiting Oak Hill held Wellston scoreless for nearly 11 minutes in the first half, building a 14-0 advantage in a non-conference girls basketball game on Wednesday night.

The Lady Oaks went on to defeat the Lady Rockets 48-21 to go 9-5 overall on the season. It was the third straight win for Oak Hill in the last four days and the fifth in its last six games.

“The girls shared the ball and moved the ball well tonight,” said Oak Hill head coach Scott Lewis. “We had a really good game last Saturday against South Gallia. We came out extremely flat on Monday night, but we got the win at River Valley.

“Tonight, the girls were focused and did what they needed to do to get the win.”

Oak Hill shot 32.7 percent (20 of 61) from the field, including 30.4 percent (7 of 23) from three-point range. The Lady Rockets, who are 4-8 overall, finished the game shooting 25.7 percent (9 of 35), including 16.6 percent (1 of 6) from beyond the arc. They also made 2 of 11 (18.1 percent) from the foul line.

Oak Hill won the battle on the boards, 38-34, including 13-6 on the offensive glass. Defensively, the Lady Oaks forced 22 turnovers and had 16 steals for the game.

Lewis said his strong defensive performance by his team, especially in the first half, contributed to the win for Oak Hill.

Despite only one field goal for the game, senior point guard Brooke Howard contributed in other ways. She had nine rebounds, nine steals, and seven assists in the win for the Lady Oaks.

Chloe Chambers scored 10 of her game-high 17 points in the first half to lead Oak Hill.

“We made some adjustments to try and get her the ball inside more at halftime,” Lewis said. “They (Wellston) ran a box-and-one, so we moved it around so she could get the ball inside. She did what she has been doing for us all year. I thought she played well tonight.”

Chambers also finished with eight rebounds and four blocks for the Lady Oaks.

Baylee Howell added 16 points on 6 of 20 from the field, including four three-pointers for Oak Hill, while Jordan Howard had nine points.

Catilin Gamble, Brooke Howard, and Kristina Zubretovska had two points apiece.

A field goal by Chambers to start the game, followed by a three-pointer by Howell set the tone the rest of the way.

The Lady Oaks ended the first quarter with an 11-0 lead.

Wellston finally got on the board with 5:13 left in the second quarter on a layup basket by Kimmi Aubrey.

Oak Hill finished with an 11-4 run to go into halftime ahead 25-6.

The Lady Oaks forced Wellston into 17 turnovers and had 13 steals, including seven by Brooke Howard in the first half.

Wellston didn't gain any ground in the third quarter and trailed 34-13 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Oaks used a 14-8 run in the final stanza for the 27-point margin of victory.

Aubrey scored a team-high 10 points to lead the Lady Rockets. Mattie Potts added six points, while Emma Henry and Allison Kilgour had two points each, and Jayla Sawyer had one.
