WELLSTON – In a battle of two teams with one win each, Wellston dropped its third straight, suffering a 41-8 setback to Portsmouth West in the 2021 OHILLCO Bowl on Friday at C.H. Jones Field.

The Senators (2-2) ran and threw the ball well on the night. They finished with three rushing touchdowns, as well as three scores through the air.

Portsmouth West dominated the Rockets 326-53 in total offense.

Jeffery Bishop had a rushing and receiving touchdown for the Senators, while Brandon Barfield and Ryan Sissel had a rushing touchdown apiece.

Sissel also had a game-high 100-yards rushing on 13 carries for Portsmouth West.

In addition, quarterback Mitchell Irwin, who finished with 121 passing yards, threw for three scores to three different receivers for Portsmouth West.

The Rockets (1-3) were limited due to six starters out for the game, including four offensive linemen.

Wellston head coach Mike Smith said he had guys playing on the offensive line who have never played there.

“We were down several players, and they (Portsmouth West) have a good football team,” Smith said. “We have six kids out, and five of them play a lot of football.

“When you have kids playing on the offensive line that have never played there, it makes it tough. Against a good football team, it makes it even tougher.”

Individually, Isaac Molihan rushed for 30 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries for Wellston.

In addition, Aiden Graham had 32 receiving yards on one catch, while Jeremiah Frisby finished with 35 yards passing. Frisby completed 5 of 13 attempts with no interceptions.

Molihan scored on a five-yard burst late in the third quarter, culminating an eight-play, 54-yard march for the only score of the game for Wellston. Frisby then hooked up with Evan Brown for the two-point conversion.

The Rockets punted five times while turning the ball over on downs twice and lost two fumbles.

Irwin threw for two touchdowns in the first quarter, including a 41-yard touchdown pass to Bishop on the first offensive series of the game for the Senators.

Then Portsmouth West blocked a punt, and on the next play, Ethan Moore caught a 25-yard scoring pass from Irwin to take a 14-0 advantage.

Portsmouth West extended its lead to 21-0 with 55-seconds remaining in the first quarter on a 59-yard run by Bishop.

The Senators forged a 28-0 halftime lead after Sissel capped a four-play, 45-yard drive on a 20-yard touchdown run with 5:43 left in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Irwin hit Cole Tipton for a six-yard touchdown pass to cap a nine-play, 51-yard drive for the Senators on their opening drive in the second half.

After Wellston scored in the third quarter, Brandon Barfield capped the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run that gave the visitors an insurmountable 41-8 lead with 8:06 left in the game.

Coach Smith is hoping he will get several of his players back before next week.

“Hopefully, we will have a better morale in the locker room, and we will come out and play better next week.”

Wellston will open Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division play at Alexander next Friday.
