WELLSTON – The Wellston Golden Rockets pulled out a gutty 54-46 win over New Hope Christian Academy in a non-league basketball game on Tuesday night.

Cyan Ervin scored 13 of his game-high 29 points in the second half while grabbing eight rebounds for Wellston. Ervin also added four assists and had four steals in the win.

Evan Brown scored 13 points while Garrett Brown added eight points, and Will Briggs had four points for Wellston.

The Rockets shot 47 percent (23 of 49) from the floor and made 4 of 15 (27 percent) attempts from three-point range.

Wellston held New Hope to 31 percent (16 of 52) from the floor, including 4 of 21 (19 percent) from three-point range. The Statesmen shot 77 percent (10 of 13) from the free throw line.

Wellston led 15-8 after one quarter of play and went into the halftime break with a 29-19 advantage.

Wellston slowly built their lead to as much as 15 points, 42-27, with 3:31 left in the third quarter after Ervin converted a three-point play.

However, New Hope responded, cutting the deficit to four, 50-46, with 2:09 to play in the fourth. But Ervin followed with a layup, and Garrett Brown made two free throws to seal the victory.

“I thought we came out and had a good start for the first time in a couple of games,” said Wellston head coach Robert Fouty. “We got into a little foul trouble, but we managed through it and was able to keep the lead.

“We played a little choppy at times, but we finished strong when we needed to.”

Lane Brunning scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds to lead New Hope. Ethan Cook finished with eight points, and Simon Kuhlwein added six for the Statesmen.

Wellston was scheduled to return to action in a TVC-Ohio Division matchup at Vinton County on Friday. However, the game was postponed until January 29 due to COVID. The Rockets host Reedsville Eastern in a boys, girls’ doubleheader on Tuesday.
