By the time you read this, we should be in our third day of deer gun season.  Deer gun season runs from Nov. 26 – Dec. 2, 2018.  Another two days will be available on Dec. 15 & 16.  Muzzle loader season will be Jan. 5-8.
The ODNR has agreed that only antlered deer can be taken from public hunting lands, after the week-long gun season.
Eric, Lucas and Hancock counties were added to the past fall turkey season.  This means that 70 of Ohio’s 88 counties are now included in the fall turkey season.  I remember well when I was 16 years old, we were bow hunting in Wayne National Forest and a team of rangers showed up to release turkeys.  What a success story that has been.  Proof positive that we can do the right thing if we set our minds to it.
After completing my third summer in Florida, I feel like I am acclimated to this tropical weather down here.  I didn’t hardly sweat this summer, nothing like I did in 2016 anyway.  Another factor could be that I have started wearing a long-sleeved, white fishing shirt underneath my letter carrier shirt.  In fact, I know this reduces my perspiration, because one day I didn’t have a clean one, so I just wore my letter carrier shirt, and I sweated more that day than any other day of the summer.
Thank God that we actually had a summer without a hurricane or a tropical storm that affected our part of Florida.  It’s funny how in Ohio, you never really pay attention to the hurricanes and tropical storms. I mean you just casually glance at it when it’s on the news, but for the most part you really don’t pay that much attention.  I do recall a couple of days with all-day hurricane rains, but that is nothing compared to facing the storm on the coastline.
If you are deer hunting this week, remember, SAFETY FIRST!!!  There is no deer that is worth the cost of a human life.  Be absolutely 100 percent certain you have a safe shot before you even release your safety.
And remember the old motto that I love so much, “We do not hunt to kill, we kill to have hunted.”
God bless you all,
RHM
