Ohio Treasurer Robert Sprague visited Rio Grande on Tuesday, May 10 to present the University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College with the Compass Award in recognition of their demonstrated excellence in the field of financial literacy education.

“Understanding the ins and outs of financial aid and loan options can be overwhelming for students and their families,” said Treasurer Sprague. “But the University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College are working to ensure incoming students have the right tools to navigate the financial aspect of their education. In doing so, the institutions are putting them on a path toward success, and we’re proud to recognize these critical efforts.”

As part of his visit, Treasurer Sprague participated in a roundtable discussion with President Ryan Smith and financial literacy stakeholders to learn more about their work. Additionally, Treasurer Sprague joined President Smith for a tour of the Rio Grande campus.

The University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College represent a unique partnership between a private university and a public community college. Through this model, students can reach their education goals by utilizing transfer credits between both schools to lower costs and earn specific certifications.

This partnership has made significant strides to enhance transparency and make information regarding student loans and financial aid more understandable for families and students. Additionally, students receive counseling and financial education related to their course selections as part of the financial aid process.

The monthly Compass Award commends organizations, programs, and individuals across the state who are working to guide Ohioans toward financial literacy education and empowerment. In addition to the Compass Award, the Treasurer’s office maintains an online Financial Literacy Resource Guide to provide Ohioans with a series of resources to help make informed decisions around budgeting, saving and borrowing.
