For the first time since the days of World War II, there will not be an Apple Festival on the downtown streets this year. The festival had been scheduled for next week, Tuesday through Saturday, Sept. 22-26, but the decision to cancel the 2020 edition was made earlier this summer due to the COVID-19 situation.

Well in advance of the festival being canceled, all three school districts in Jackson County had scheduled Wednesday, Sept. 23, as an off day for students because of the festival.

At the Sept. 8 meeting of the Jackson City Board of Education the Board approved a revision to the school calendar to change Sept. 23 from an off day for students to a regular school day with students in attendance. In conjunction with this, Tuesday, Dec. 1, was added as a new off day for students. This will make the annual Thanksgiving Day holiday break a day longer than usual. The new holiday break will begin on Wednesday, Nov. 25 and continue through Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Meanwhile, both the Wellston City School District and the Oak Hill Union Local School District will retain Wednesday, Sept. 23 as an off day for students.
