During the first Coalton Village Council meeting of the new year, Mayor Kim Milliken swore in the new members of the Council, including new Councilwoman, Catherine Griffith.

The Village Council meeting, which took place on Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m., marked the very first for the year of 2022. After losing members of Council, Mayor Milliken dedicated this meeting to swearing in old and new members of Council alike. Mayor Milliken began the meeting by swearing in three persons who had already been serving on the Coalton Village Council: Jim Milliken, James Barnes, and Michael Whaley.

Another member of Council given the spotlight was new member, Catherine Griffith, a Coalton local resident and former member of the U.S. Air Force. The new councilwoman filled the spot left open by the resignation of previous Councilwoman Tina Wyatt.

Griffith, a 33-year-old mother of six, joined Council in order to establish her roots in the community, a sentiment she once expressed with her brothers and sisters in arms. In addition to her background in the military, Councilwoman Griffith has experience in engineering, having worked for Simplified Acquisition of Base Engineer Requirements (SABER) as a project manager.

While this is Griffith’s first time as an official member of any local government, she expressed during the meeting that she is looking forward to getting over the learning curve that comes with the position and will do her best to be an active member of Council. She will be serving on Council’s Finance, Utilities, and Records Retentions committees.

Another position which was reestablished was the position of President of Council. This position, which has been held by Jim Milliken, was once again granted to Milliken after a vote made by the Council after discussing projects on the agenda.

Coalton Village Council meetings now take place on the first and third Tuesday of each month at the Coalton’s Community Building across from the Post Office at 10 2nd St. in Coalton. Updates on the Village of Coalton can be found on their dedicated Facebook page, “Village of Coalton, Ohio.”
