The Vinton County Local Board of Education members had some very good news bestowed upon them during their meeting Monday evening, Nov. 16, at Central Elementary School.

Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) Southeast Regional Manager Paul Mock was on hand to personally announce the glad tidings and to present awards to South Elementary School and West Elementary School as well as Vinton County Local Board of Education President Tom McManis.

Mock announced that both South and West schools were both being honored with “High Progress” awards. The program recognizes schools that have sustained high achievement and made substantial progress while serving a significant number of economically disadvantaged students. The U.S. Department of Education approved it as part of Ohio’s flexibility waiver for the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in 2012. On hand to accept the awards were South Principal Miranda Smith and South Principal Michael Thompson.

Mock also presented an award to Board President McManis for his 15 years of continuous service as a Vinton County Board of Education member. Mc Manis was elected president of the board at the beginning of 2020.

Mock also noted the OSBA was not able to hold the regional banquet as planned this past spring at Vinton County High School as it had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the Banquet was held as a virtual event. Vinton County Superintendent Rick Brooks thanked Mock for attending and sharing the good news with the Board of Education.

In other news from the Nov. 16 meeting, the board approved:

*A $1,300 donation from the Lost and Found Worship Center for Project Backpack.

*A $500 donation from Austin Powder Company for Project Backpack’s “Helping Hands for Christmas Project.”

*A contract amendment with the South Central Educational Service Center to include audiology services for the 2020/21 School Year.

* A new job description for teachers.

The next meeting of the Vinton County Board of Education will be in December. The date, time and place will be announced at a later time.
