Recently, the Oaks United, Inc. organization conducted its 10th-annual Growing Oaks Christmas Giveaway, wherein the group collects and packages food for Oak Hill Elementary School students in need.

Their Christmas Food Giveaway, which occurred Wednesday, Dec. 15, was a great success, according to Oaks United Director, Alicia Kamer. In total, the organization was able to aid 102 families, which totals 290 students. This food drive, much like the group’s other monthly food giveaways, provided kid-friendly foods for students during their time out of school for the winter break.

In addition to meals, the families were also gifted a “family movie night” gift bag, which included a family-friendly DVD, movie candies, popcorn, and Kool-Aid packets. The aforementioned families were also given a ticket to go to the Growing Oaks Toy Giveaway the following day, where most of the toys were donated for the families.

Aside from the family turnout, the organization also had several volunteers in attendance, including members of Oak Hill High School’s National Honor Society (ages seven and older) to help distribute food. This year marks The Growing Oaks Food Program’s 10th year of successfully assisting Oak Hill families.

“None of this would be possible without our donors or volunteers,” stated Kamer in an interview with The Telegram. “It’s a labor of love at times but seeing the happy faces of children makes it all worthwhile.”

Oaks United, Inc. is a 501c3, meaning it is a non-profit, tax-deductible organization. Much of the group’s resources are gathered through monetary donations, which are then used to purchase food.
