Wellston City School District Nurse Kelly Waugh (pictured middle) was honored by the Board of Education during the Monday night, April 19 meeting, with the Hero Award from the Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools (CORAS).

Superintendent Karen Boch (pictured left) stated CORAS, in recent years, has recognized teachers and support staff members, but wanted to honor a “school hero” in 2021.

“We have lots of school heroes, but in the midst of COVID, one stood out specifically, and that was Kelly Waugh,” Boch stated. “We want to present her with the CORAS Hero Award for heroic efforts working with families, students and staff as it relates to COVID-19 contact tracing, illnesses and protocols with compassion, empathy and perseverance. She has been instrumental in working with me, the families, the Jackson County Health Department (JCHD) and all of our students and staff during this pandemic.”

After accepting the award, Waugh expressed how much she loves working in the district and touted the efforts of her colleagues.

“Most impressive to me is the teaching staff, custodians, bus drivers and everybody working together as a team,” she said.
