Due to the mandatory closure of schools for the final two-plus months of the school year, the seniors in the Oak Hill High School (OHHS) Class of 2020 missed out on several of the most important senior-year experiences. In addition to not being in school, class members graduated without having a live graduation, attending the prom, or participating in sports and many other extra-curricular events and activities.

Marykay Reese, whose daughter, Alyssa, is one of those star-crossed 2020 graduates, is leading a private effort to provide those class members with a better-late-than-never Senior Prom. The event is scheduled for Saturday, July 11, and will be held at Diamond J Ranch located at 1483 Hickory Grove Road near Oak Hill.

“We wanted to give these kids something back because they missed out on so much,” Reese told The Telegram.

Reese’s partner in the event is Tosha Blanton and the two women are working together to organize the event and raise the necessary funds. The prom will not be a school-sponsored or sanctioned event and it will be conducted off school property and financed by private and community fundraising. Organizers have raised some money thus far through gun raffles and monetary donations.

The prom will have a theme of “Be the Star You Are” and will be open to only members of the Class of 2020 and their dates. The prom is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. until 11 p.m. Oak Hill area resident Rob Puckett will provide DJ/music services and Reese indicates there may be other surprise entertainment. Free food will also be available. The stated dress code calls for the girls to wear “those dresses” while guys are to “listen to your girl.”

Immediately following the Senior Prom, an After Party will be conducted, also at Diamond J, which will be open until 2 a.m. It will have a western theme and different food will be available. Reese reported she has already heard from approximately 25 graduates about attending the event.

Admission will be free of charge, but the organizers are asking attendees to RSVP by calling Blanton at 740-370-8777 or Reese at 740-395-7721.
