The Jackson-Vinton Counties High School Art Show is now underway at the Markay Cultural Arts Center in downtown Jackson.

The exhibit, which features artwork from students at Jackson, Wellston, Oak Hill and Vinton County high schools, kicked off with an opening-night reception on Thursday evening, April 1. The show will continue through the month of April, ending on Friday, April 30. Matt Wilson, the art chair for the Southern Hills Arts Council (SHAC) hosted the reception.

The artwork was judged with the overall Best-of-Show award going to Wellston High School junior Hadley Fain. There were also first-place and Honorable Mention awards for students from each school.

The awards were as follows: 

Best of Show-Hadley Finn, Senior, Scratchboard, Wellston High School

First Place-Jackson High School-Miah King, Sophomore, Mixed Media

First Place-Oak Hill High School-Garrett McNerlin, Junior, Mixed Media

First Place-Wellston High School-Hadley Fain, Senior, Colored Pencil on Paper

First Place-Vinton County High School-Elizabeth Whiteman, Senior, Graphite

Participants from Wellston High School:  Hadley Fain, Maylee Hamblin, Bella Arigoni, Hailey Jeffries, Jamie Stabler, and Shayla Rice.

Participants from Oak Hill High School:  Skyi Rawlins, Smanthah Manier, Kyle Midkiff, Johnathan Mullett, Sara Coon, Garrett McNerlin, and Haiden Rife.

Participants from Vinton County High School: Natalie Arthur and Elizabeth Whiteman.

SHAC has conducted the High School Art Show for many years with the objective of supporting the high school art programs and to encourage the young artists and put their artwork in the spotlight.

A SHAC spokesman offered the following comment to the youthful participants: “We are excited by your creativity and expertise. We encourage each of you to continue to expand your cultural horizons.”

The Markay gallery is open to the public Wednesday through Friday of each week from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Markay is located at 269 E. Main St. in Jackson.
