The Wellston American Legion Post 371 Bean Dinner has become a red-letter event for Labor Day weekend in Wellston and not even COVID-19 could stop the tradition for 2020, as it was held Monday, Sept. 7 at the post on 1001 Pennsylvania Ave. The ongoing pandemic did have an impact on service, but the event was held nonetheless.

There was a large crowd on hand and the parking lot was full of cars and motorcycles.  On the outside, American Legion members took turns stirring the beans in the cast-iron pot. Inside, there was a menu of hot dogs, sloppy joes, cakes, and drinks for sale.

The inside dinners were spread out and masks were worn--but the spirit of the event was still there. The Auxiliary members were present in full-force, as Secretary Marsha Boyer and Joyce Austin were selling the paper poppy flowers usually sold in the spring, but were not able to be at that time this year.

Commander Troy Thacker thanked everyone for coming and supporting the Legion, which conducts community events all year in the Wellston area and is proud to be part of the city and school district.
