Farming remains an important part of life and work in rural Southeastern Ohio and Jackson Ag Service stands ready to provide many of the products and services needed to do it.

Jackson Ag Service, which is family-owned and operated by the Unger family, is located at 61 Dickason Street in Jackson. The business is situated on a three-acre tract at the Huron Street intersection, next to the Jackson High School track and baseball field. A feed mill has operated in that distinctive-looking building for at least 60 years.

Sales & Merchandising Manager Travis Unger, who earned an agricultural business degree from Ohio State University, describes Jackson Ag Service as a "one-stop shop" for farming-related products, but also says the in-house retail section resembles a hardware store with products needed by the in-town homeowner as well as the rural farmer.

"Farmers are a huge target of ours, but we can also service gardeners, deer hunters, and homeowners," Unger noted.

Since taking over Jackson Ag Service, Unger says the current ownership and the eight employees have stressed and practiced the two tenets that will hopefully lift any business -- offering value in the products and providing top-notch customer service.

"We try to do things a little differently," Unger commented. "We try to be lot more competitive on our pricing, and on the service end of things, we try to go above and beyond for our customers."

As always, the business is prepared to service both large and small volume buyers and be responsive to personal needs and wants of every customer in an informal and friendly manner which reflects a hometown feel and the family values that go along with it.
Even with the variety of products available in the store section, the mainline products of Jackson Ag Service include feed, seed, fertilizer, and chemicals.

Custom-mixed fertilizer is offered and Jackson Ag Service can supply buggies to help customers get it to their fields. The company can also transport fertilizer to the site via spreader trucks and provide application services.

In the feed sector, Jackson Ag Service can custom-grind and mix feed available in bags or in bulk and the bulk amounts can be delivered.

Also, Jackson Ag Service does mixing of garden seed. Though winter is just around the corner, the current period is a busy time for the early purchase of corn and soybean seed which is now available at discounted prices.

As for chemicals, Jackson Ag Service has a variety of herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides for sale.

In the store section just inside the main front entrance, the shelves are full of a wide variety of useful and practical items including boots, garden supplies, deer hunting supplies, mineral licks, animal health products, feed for dogs, cats, and bird suet, transmission fluid, mice and rat killer, livestock collars, fence energizers, and heat lamps as well as shovels, rakes, and axes. And this is just a partial list of the inventory.

Jackson Ag Service strives to have some of the best-known product lines available for its customers and is a dealer for such well-known brands, including but not limited to Beck's Hybrids (seeds), Joy Dog Food, Southern States (wide range of farm products), Show-Rite (feeds), Starmaster (show feeds), and Sullivan Supply (livestock grooming supplies).

Outside on the sprawling lot, there is much more than meets the eye of the casual observer who might just drive by on Dickason Street. To the rear of the property, one can find such larger items as hay feeders, treated fence posts, steel fence posts, creep feeders, and corral panels.

Unger is pleased with and appreciative of the business support Jackson Ag Center has received and hints of some new things coming in the spring. The business currently draws customers not only from Jackson County, but also Vinton, Ross, Pike, Scioto, Gallia, and Athens Counties. "We have a (customer) radius of about an hour's drive from here," Unger observed.

The regular business hours for Jackson Ag Center are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon, and closed Sunday. The phone number is 740-286-6481. Gift certificates can be purchased throughout the year and certainly rate as a suitable Christmas gift.
