The Apple City Players (ACP), in association with the Southern Hills Art Council, The Markay Cultural Arts Center and the Brooks Jones Endowment for the Arts have announced The ACP Youth Theater Summer Workshop for 2022.

This six-week course in the theater arts is open to all youths in grades 6-12 in the Jackson County School system. Workshop dates will take place on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Markay Cultural Arts Center in Jackson and include June 4, June 18, July 9, July 16, July 23, and July 30. Participants are advised to sign up early for this workshop. The course itinerary will be presented at a special event on Wednesday, May 18 at 7 p.m. at the Markay.

The classes will bring in professionals and local talent to open the world of theater into the lives of the youth of Jackson County. The goal is to nurture a love for the arts and give new life to the growth of community theater in the local area. Attendees will experience the workings of the theatrical arts and all the behind-the-scenes crafts such as set design, stage lighting, sound and technology, costuming, props, directing, stage management and producing.

These workshops will revolve around a brand-new youth production called “Kid Kringle” – an original, locally produced musical. Kid Kringle is the story of Kris Kringle’s (Santa) younger brother. All the sets, costumes, lighting and sound will be focused on bringing “Kid Kringle” to the stage in December 2022.

Open auditions for this wonderful musical will begin in August, with rehearsals scheduled up until showtime in December. The summer workshops will only focus on the behind-the-scenes workings of “Kid Kringle.” There is no obligation to audition or be involved with the actual show, but participation is encouraged to continue throughout the entire process.

The workings of family events and summer vacations is definitely considered, but a commitment to attend at least four of the workshops is requested. Registration will begin Sunday, May 1. Questions can be addressed to Cynthia Stiffler at Applecityplayers@gmail.com.
