BOYS GOLF: Ironmen advance to district tournament

TODD COMPSTON
Sports Editor

WILLIAMSPORT - The Jackson High School boys' golf team did just enough to earn a spot in the Division I district tournament on Thursday afternoon.

Senior Ethan Mercer led the Ironmen to a fourth-place finish in the Southeast sectional tournament at Crown Hill Golf Course in Williamsport.

Warren (338), Sheridan (340), Athens (364), and Jackson (364) were the four teams, who qualified for Tuesday's district tournament at EagleSticks Golf Course in Zanesville.

Only the top four teams as well as the top four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced.

Marietta (371), who was fifth, was followed by Hillsboro (399) with a sixth-place finish, while Chillicothe (408) came in seventh, and Logan (420) was eighth in the team standings on Thursday.

Mercer's 40-40-80 tied him for the second-best round with Austin Barta of Warren to lead the way for the Ironmen on the par-72 course. It was a balanced effort by the Ironmen, as Aidan Massie followed with a 44-43-87 to tie for the eighth-best round in the standings, while Trase Speakman (49-48-97) and Caleb Rose (49-51-100) rounded out the scoring for Jackson.

In addition, Cooper Donaldson shot 55-52-107 for the Ironmen.

"It was windy, and the greens were fast," said Jackson head coach Kevin Bowman. "There were a lot of three putts today. Ethan Mercer tied for the second-best round of the day, and Aidan Massie tied for the eighth-best round.

"Cooper (Donaldson) and Trase had trouble getting off the tee today, and I'm sure they will be spending some time on the range this weekend. Caleb Rose came in with the team's fourth score to put us through to the districts."

With a fifth-place finish last season, the Ironmen just missed qualifying for the district tournament. However, Aiden Massie and Kole Weaver qualified for one of the four individual spots in 2017.

Marietta's J.B. Wharff (49-45-94) and Gabe MyCroft (44-50-94) were involved in a four-person playoff for the final two individual qualifying spots, as they were third and fourth respectively. They will join Josh Sandford (46-44-90) and Justin Hartley (46-46-92) of Marietta at EagleSticks next week.

Sheridan's Costa Coconis (37-38 -75) was the sectional medalist, while Warren's Barta (42-38 -80) and Mercer were co-runner-ups.

Division I Girls

The Jackson girls' golf season ended on Monday, in Division I sectional tournament action at Pickaway Golf Course in Circleville.

There was six full teams, plus one individual who competed. The top three teams, as well as the top three individuals, advanced to the district tournament.

The Ironladies finished in sixth place with a team score of 546, while Logan (417), Sheridan (431), and Miami Trace (461) were the three qualifying teams.

Kylie DeFoy paced Jackson after shooting 70-60-130, while Kylie Duncan fired 68-68 -136, and Isabella Scully-Tenpenny had a 68-69-137. Sierra Stiffler rounded out the scoring for Jackson with a 67-76-143.

Additionally, Madeline Lewis shot 78-68-146 for the Ironladies.

Hillsboro's Kristin Jamieson shot 34-39-73 to capture sectional medalist honors.

Division II Boys

CHILLICOTHE - The Vinton County boys' golf team finished 90 strokes away from a district qualifying berth on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Division II district tournament at Jaycees Golf Course in Chillicothe.

The Vikings shot 432 as a team and finished in 13th in the team standings out of 15 participating schools.

Unioto (324), Fairfield Union (336), Logan Elm (338), Westfall (341), and New Lexington (342) were the five qualifying teams.

For the Vikings, Noah Nobles shot 41-46-87 to pace the team, while Brock Hamon had a 57-56-113. Lance Montgomery (55-60-115) and Christopher Mason (60-57-117) rounded out the scoring for Vinton County. Also, Owen Salyer shot 61-59-120 for the Vikings.
