WELLSTON - The Wellston Golden Rockets knew they were going to have to give it their all and more against the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes on Friday night.
Missed opportunities by the Rockets resulted in the Buckeyes spoiling homecoming at C.H. Jones Field with a 31-20 win.
Keegan Wilburn, who had a 61-yard touchdown catch to go along with 117 rushing yards, added touchdown runs of 4 and 5 yards for the Buckeyes, who improved to 3-4 overall and 3-0 in league play.
It was also the 15th straight TVC-Ohio Division win for Nelsonville-York, which have not lost at C.H. Jones Field since 2001.
Nick Davis paced the Rockets - who dropped to 3-4 on the year, and 2-1 in TVC-Ohio play - with 102 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns.
With the loss, Wellston now trails in the all-time series against the Buckeyes 35-11.
The evening didn't start the way Wellston head coach Jay Lucas would've hoped, as the Buckeyes capped an 8-play, 50-yard touchdown march on their opening possession of the game. Wilburn found the end zone from four yards out to make it 7-0 with 8:35 left in the first quarter.
The first of several missed opportunities by the Rockets began on the ensuing kickoff when Jonathon Garvin's 84-yard return for an apparent touchdown was negated because of a holding penalty at the NY 48.
Four plays later, however, Nick Davis rumbled into the end zone from 37 yards out, but the two-point conversion run failed, and Wellston trailed 7-6.
Then Nelsonville-York made it 14-6 on the first play of its next drive when quarterback Mikey Seel, who threw for 116 yards, hit Wilburn for a 61-yard touchdown pass.
Almost four minutes later, everything was even after Nick Davis' three-yard rushing touchdown and Garvin's two-point conversion run.
The contest appeared to be headed for a shootout, as neither team's defense could stop the other's offense in the first quarter. However, Wellston held Nelsonville-York to a three-and-out on its final series in the quarter, before a special teams breakdown by the Rockets occurred early in the second period.
Wellston faced a fourth-and-4 at its own 36 when Eston Riley's punt only traveled to the 38 before going out of bounds.
The result was a two-yard punt, and the Buckeyes capitalized on the short field to take a 21-14 lead after a 19-yard touchdown pass from Seel to Brandon Phillips.
Wellston's ensuing drive stalled near midfield and the Rockets punted the ball back to the Buckeyes.
But R.J. Kemp intercepted Seel two plays later at the Wellston 42, and this time, the Rockets answered the bell.
A pass interference penalty by the Buckeyes, followed by a personal foul penalty aided the drive. Then Kemp hit Hunter Smith for 16 yards on third and long to set up his 7-yard touchdown pass to Rylan Molihan two plays later.
Wellston trialed 21-20 after the two-point conversion run failed with 30-seconds remaining in the first half.
The Buckeyes, however, got payback with a long return by Brady Jones, Jr. to the Wellston 28, and Seels 13-yard pass to Wilburn three plays later, set up Alec Taylor's 20-yard field goal with no time left on the clock to give Nelsonville-York a 24-20 lead at halftime.
Wellston's offense, plagued by missed opportunities, would not score again, as its opening drive in the third quarter ended when Wilburn intercepted Kemp in the end zone.
After Phillips picked Kemp on Wellston's next possession, the Buckeyes drove 39 yards, and a 5-yard touchdown run by Wilburn made it 31-20 with 10:38 left in the fourth quarter.
Following a four-minute, 36-second drive by the Rockets that ended at the NY 15, the Buckeyes were able to drain the remaining 4:37 off the game clock to seal the win.
