BASEBALL: Oaks defeat Rockets 13-9

BUZZ FISHER
Sports Writer

OAK HILL - The Oak Hill Oaks rallied from a 5-1 deficit to defeat Wellston 13-9 on Friday afternoon at Oak Hill High School, giving Oak Hill a split with their inter-county rival on the season.

This game saw pitchers from both teams without command of their pitches as Oak Hill gave up 10 total free passes on six hit batsman and three walks. Wellston, on the other hand, gave up eight total free passes with five of those freebies coming across the plate to score for both teams.

Oak Hill took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Wellston countered with five runs in the top of the second with only one batter reaching base via a hit. Clutters would hit the first two batters he faced before Nate Frisby sacrificed both runners into scoring position. Chase Ingalls walked to load the bases, and then Clutters struck out Hunter Cardwell before giving up a bases-loaded walk to Austin Sharp plating Timothy Stanley. A throwing error from shortstop allowed Cole Broaddus to cross the plate for a 2-1 lead. Eventually Ingalls, Sharp, and Bates scored to open a 5-1 advantage.

The Oaks came back with two runs in the bottom of the second on just one hit. Austin Dean and Daniel Eggers opened the inning with a walk and a hit batsman. Hunter Farmer was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. A throwing error by the Rocket catcher would allow Dean to score and Eggars scored on a single by Walls making it 5-3.

A walk to Stanley leading off the top of the third would result in a single run by the Rockets, but Oak Hill countered with two in the bottom of the third after Clutters singled and Logan Hines walked. A throwing error would aid Clutters to cross the plate and Hines came in on a bases-loaded walk to Eggers.

Wellston scored twice in the top of the fourth to build an 8-5 advantage, but after going down in order in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Oaks scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to take their first lead since it was a 1-0 in the first inning.

Logan Hines was hit with a pitch leading off the inning and with one out, Dean doubled to score Hines. Eggers and Lahrmer each singled with the Lahrmer safety scoring Dean. Then after a strikeout, Walls hit an RBI single to score Eggers and Lahrmer.

Wellston scored the tying run in the top of the sixth after Sharp and Bates got back-to-back base hits with Sharp scoring on a fielding error.

The Oaks would send eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning as they reached Wellston pitching for four hits. Clutters, who led off with a walk would score on a single by Dean. Hines, who also reached on a base hit, scored what would be the winning run on a single by Eggers.

The Oaks held off the Rockets in the seventh for the win.
