OAK HILL - The Oak Hill Oaks remained undefeated in SOC Division II play after defeating the Portsmouth West Senators 53-40 Friday night at Oak Hill High School.
Oak Hill struggled in the early going of the first quarter as the Senators stayed close with the game tied at six after a layup by Brandon Moore with 3:29 left.
The Oaks, however, closed the quarter on a 9-2 run to lead 15-8 at the end of the first period.
Portsmouth West's Jesse Johnson sandwiched a three-pointer off the wing and a short jumper from the lane around two free throws by Oak Hill's Mitchell Hale to make it 17 13, but Hale would score eight straight points to give the Oaks a 25-13 advantage just shy of the midway point of the stanza.
Dylan Bradford stopped the bleeding with a pair free throws, but only momentarily, as the Oaks ended the quarter with an 8-4 run to take a 33-17 advantage into the halftime.
West came out guns blazing in the third quarter and outscored the Oaks 16-8 to close the deficit to just eight points, 41-33 heading into the fourth quarter.
A three-point play by Chase Hammond followed by Landon Carroll's three-pointer out of the corner answered two free throws by Moore to open the fourth quarter and the Oaks extended their lead to 47-35.
Following the Carroll three-pointer, the Oaks slowed the pace over the next four minutes, while outscoring the Senators 4-1 to take their advantage to 16 points at 51-35 with less than two minutes to play.
The Senators would end the game on a 5-2 run, but it was too little too late.
Chase Hammond led Oak Hill with 13 points while Mason Darby and Mitchell Hale added 12 and 11 points respectively.
Jesse Johnson paced Portsmouth West with 11 points with Jordan Frasure right behind with 10.
The Oaks were in non-league action on Saturday at Coal Grove.
