A loss at Nelsonville-York last week has left the Wellston Golden Rockets with little room for error heading into the final three weeks of the high school football season.
The Rockets will be at home tonight with Athens, with a goal of snapping an eight-game losing streak to the Bulldogs. A loss would give the Rockets a 2-2 start in the TVC Ohio Division and damage hopes for a postseason berth even further if not completely.
Wellston (4-3, 2-1 TVC-OHIO) hasn't qualified for the playoffs since 2006 and is currently 14th in the OHSAA computer rankings in Division V, Region 19. Only the top eight schools qualify for the playoffs in each region.
The Rockets lost two of their first four games against Jackson and Portsmouth West, followed by back-to-back wins over Alexander 50-7 to begin TVC Ohio Division play on Sept. 22 and River Valley, 28-7 the next week.
Wellston is coming off a 34-2 loss to Nelsonville-York last week. The Buckeye's Garrett Maiden threw for 184 yards and a touchdown on 7 of 13 passing. He also rushed for 44 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the game.
Athens (7-1, 3-0 TVC-OHIO) has wins over Warren and Watkins Memorial sandwiched around its only a 27-12 loss to Canal Winchester in week two.
Since then, the Bulldogs have gone on to win four straight over Alexander 48-0, Vinton County 28-14, Logan 21-3 and Meigs 19-18 last week.
Evan Adams led Athens with 172 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the third quarter for the win. Clay Davis threw for 132 yards and a touchdown, completing 8 of 22 pass attempts for the Bulldogs.
Athens is currently on the outside looking in this week, as the Bulldogs are 10th in Region 11 in the OHSAA computer rankings in Division III.
It is also homecoming week at C.H. Jones Field this week. Homecoming festivities will take place during pregame with the kick off slated for 7:30 p.m.
