McArthur- The Vinton County Lady Vikings played well Wednesday night but dropped a 25-19 ,25-22, 25-16 Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division Decision to the Alexander Lady Spartans. The Lady Vikings were very competitive as the action in games one and two was tight toward the end. Lady Viking Coach Ashley Graves was pleased with her teams' effort.
"I thought it was the best effort we have had all year," she stated. "We played together and communicated well. They have a very good program there. With the loss the Lady Vikings fall to 1-16 with three games remaining.
The Lady Vikings hung tough in game one as Kelsey Ward delivered an ace to bring the Lady Vikings to with six (23-17) but the Lady Spartans rebounded and claimed the win. In game two, the action was close as Josie Hembree came up with a big kill to make the score 13-11 Alexander .Later Alexander opened up a 21-17 lead by Hembree came up with another kill to bring the score to 22-20. Alexander got a kill when they needed it as Mackenzie Hawk came up with one to make the score 23-20. Her kill proved big and it propelled them to the win. In the third game, Alexander got off to the big start a cruised to wrap up the win.
Vinton County has several key offensive and defensive leaders. Becca Clemmons and Josie Hembree led in kills with six and five respectively. The Lady Vikings has seven aces as Ward had three and Maylea Huff had two. Brooksanne Barnett led the way in assist category with seven while Hembree also played well defensively with 11 digs while Clemmons chipped in with 10.
Coach Graves stated this is the kind of effort they will need as the post season nears.
