Coming off a disappointing loss at home against Portsmouth West last week, the Wellston Golden Rockets open Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division action tonight when they travel to Albany to play the Alexander Spartans.
Wellston's defense will need to regroup after allowing 237 yards of total offense, including 162 yards rushing to the Senators last week. They will face another good running attack this week against Alexander.
But the Rockets have their own resilient runner in senior tailback Travis Jayjohn. He rushed for 98 yards against Portsmouth West, including a 56-yard run in the fourth quarter, which eventually led to Wellston's only score in the game on a nine-yard touchdown run by Jonathon Garvin.
However, the offensive line wasn't able to give the run game a lot of opportunities against Portsmouth West, as the Senators loaded the box to stop the run.
They also had trouble helping senior quarterback Jordan Lucas for the majority of the game, as he was sacked seven times for minus-46 yards. He completed 4 of 7 passes for 60 yards with one interception, before leaving the game with an injury late in the third quarter.
On special teams, the Senators also blocked two Michael Graham punts, including one with 1:34 left in the third quarter that was recovered by Brandon Weaver in the end zone for a 31-0 lead, forcing a running clock.
The Rockets concluded its non-conference schedule with a 2-2 mark after opening the season with a 35-0 loss against Jackson, followed by wins over Huntington (21-9) and Adena (49-7).
Alexander (1-3, 0-1 TVC-OHIO) is in the midst of a three-game losing streak. The Spartans lost to Athens, 48-0 in their TVC Ohio Division opener last week. After defeating Federal Hocking 42-6 to open their season, the Spartans were outscored 93-20 in losses to Chesapeake and Sciotoville East.
Wellston leads the all-time series against Alexander, 24-8-0. The Rockets have won 11 times in the 2000s, but have only won twice in the last five meetings.
A year ago, Wellston was a 36-13 winner, while the Spartans won in 2015 and 2014. They defeated the Rockets 33-20 at home in 2015 and was a 31-20 winner at in 2014 at C.H. Jones Field.
Wellston's last TVC Ohio Division win on the road was a week 9 triumph at Meigs, 43-12 last season.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and can be heard live on 1330 WYPC-AM or it can be streamed live mixlr.com. Rick Perdue calls the play-by-play and Mark Thomas provides color commentary.
