The Wellston City School District in conjunction with the City of Wellston and the Wellston Police Department (WPD) has secured the services of Officer Sonya Jones as the first School Resource Officer (SRO) to serve the school system in approximately eight years.

Officer Jones has been working full-time with the district since March and her services are secured at least through the end of this school year. Wellston Superintendent Karen Boch told The Telegram she is currently working with WPD Chief John Robinson on a memorandum of understanding for Officer Jones to extend her services as the district's SRO as well.

Boch explained that Officer Jones will help the district in dealing with parents, teachers and the community as a whole, as well as serve as a positive liaison between the district and the WPD.

"I feel like we have a really good relationship with the WPD," Boch said via telephone. "This is actually a benefit for everybody involved. She's been a positive presence in the district."

Specifically, Boch mentioned Officer Jones recently speaking to Wellston Intermediate School students about topics such as her new role as a SRO, school safety, bus safety, following school rules and bullying.

Boch reiterated her appreciation for not only Officer Jones' work in the short time she's been with the district, but also the good working relationship between the district and the city, specifically with the WPD and Wellston Fire Department.

"They're always helpful," she said. "I think this only enhances our relationship. We're very appreciative of being able to collaborate with the city."

Officer Jones is being shared amongst all of the district's schools in her new role as a SRO. The city is providing funding for Officer Jones for her time while serving with the WPD, and the school district is providing funding for her time spent as the SRO. According to Chief Robinson, the city plans to apply for grant funding this spring to pay for Officer Jones' services as a SRO, and he expressed his hopes that these grant funds will be available by the start of the 2018-19 school year.
