The Jackson County Dog Pound recently accepted a donation of 12 dog boxes courtesy of the Jackson Elks Lodge #466.
During the Tuesday, Jan. 30 meeting of the Jackson County Commissioners, Jackson Elks member Alvie Pelfrey was present to present the gift to Dog Warden Deb Fout. Pelfrey explained the dog boxes were purchased with grant money the Elks obtained in connection with the 150th anniversary of the organization.
Commissioner Paul Haller gave thanks to the Jackson Elks for their generosity and mentioned a number of civic undertakings the group oversees annually including the Flag Day ceremony, basketball and soccer shoots, and Christmas parties at Hope Haven. Haller said the Elks are very involved in the community and described the group as a great organization.
Fout likewise gave thanks to the Elks on behalf of the dog pound. She said she had just recently given away the last of the dog boxes in the pound's possession, having given away five in one day. Fout and her employees give the dog boxes away at no cost, though dog owners are able to give a donation if they wish to do so. Providing this service, she explained, helps less fortunate dogs in the community as well as the dog owners who may need a bit of assistance.
"I want to stress that just because you need a dog house doesn't make you a bad dog owner," Fout said.
She explained that she has received feedback from some who have opined that, if a person cannot afford a dog house, they should not own a dog at all.
"I just whole-heartedly disagree," Fout said.
With regard to the donation, Fout said 12 dogs in the community will soon be sleeping better thanks to the Jackson Elks.
In recognition of the 150th anniversary of the Elks, Pelfrey stated a fish fry will be held at the Jackson Elks Lodge #466 on Friday, Feb. 16 beginning at 5 p.m.
