11/9/2017 4:12:00 PM Law officer impersonated in Pike County
Pike County Sheriff Charles S. Reader reports that on Nov. 3 at approximately 10:30 p.m., his office received a report of a home owner who had challenged an individual that was on his property. The individual identified himself as a deputy sheriff and even mentioned a deputy's name.
The victim, who was at that time on the phone with the Communications Center, asked for verification of the officer being at that location. Communications confirmed that the Sheriff's Office did not have an officer in that area and immediately dispatched a patrol unit to the residence. The home owner was unable to give a positive identification of the individual as it was dark and the individual was several yards away at the time he was challenged. The individual had fled the area prior to officers arriving.
Sheriff Reader wishes to caution all citizens to be aware of this incident and to immediately report any similar issues. "All of our officers should be very easily identifiable with their uniforms and marked vehicles," he said. "Should anyone have any doubts about an officer's identity, please ask to see his/her Office Credentials and/or contact the office and ask for verification from the Communications Personnel."
