Oak Hill School Board splits on transfer request

RED THOMPSON, JR.
Staff Writer

A motion voted upon by the Oak Hill Union Local School Board members to transfer Tonya Lester from her position as Teacher/Classroom Aide to Secretary at Oak Hill Elementary School failed by a 2-2 vote when the board met Monday evening, July 10 for its regular meeting.

After a long executive session, board members Aaron Michael and Paula Stewart voted to approve the transfer while members Regina Boggs and Mike French voted no. The tie vote could not be broken as board member Joe Elcess was not present. This is the second time the board has dealt with this issue as they had tabled the request at the June meeting.

Superintendent Mike McCoy stated he would look at his options and notify the Oak Hill Local Union Independent Employees Union of his options. McCoy stated he is most likely going to either repost the position or try to get Lester approved again when a full board is present. He is also going to check to see if Lester can be hired on a 2-2 vote, but he does not think so.

In personnel matters, the board approved the hiring of Norm Persin with a one-year contract as a teacher at the Oak Hill Middle School/High School for the 2017-2018 school year. The board also approved the transfer of Jimmy Persin from 5th-Grade Math to Junior High Math for the 2017-2018 school year; and accepted the resignation of Brock Conroy from his duties at the Oak Hill Union Local Schools.

In financial matters, the board approved Food Supervisor Rebecca Terry's recommendation for the following price changes for school lunch for 2017-2018 school year. The prices are $2.50 for grades K-5, $2.75 for grades 6-12 (both an increase of .25 cents each) and $3.50 for adult lunches, reflecting a $.50 increase. The breakfast will continue to be free for all students throughout the year.
