Oak Hill Area Chamber of Commerce President Kurtis Strickland issued the following news release on March 13, regarding the need to generate new funding to maintain Central Memorial Park:
"Central Memorial Park was created for the citizens of the Oak Hill area, and we are proud of our beautiful park. The Central Memorial Park Project began in 2005 when Holzer donated the former hospital site to the Oak Hill Area Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber of Commerce later auctioned off the property and used the funds from the sale to purchase the Central School property where Central Memorial Park was built.
"Initial construction of the park began in the fall of 2006 and Central Memorial Park was completed in August 2008. Many people donated their time and provided funds to make Central Memorial Park a reality.
Without them it would not have been possible. Some very generous citizens also donated funds to operate the park. Those funds have sustained Central Memorial Park for over 10 years.
"However, Central Memorial Park has many annual operating expenses including grass-cutting fees, electric bills, property taxes, liability insurance fees, and general maintenance costs. Central Memorial Park has no revenue source other than donations from generous citizens and from the Oak Hill Area Chamber of Commerce.
"Use of the park is free on a first-come, first-served basis; and since the Oak Hill Area Chamber of Commerce is run only by volunteers with no paid employees, it is simply not feasible to charge for use of Central Memorial Park. The Oak Hill Area Chamber of Commerce is doing everything it can to reduce operating costs and keep costs to a minimum, but after 10 years we find it necessary to ask citizens for donations to continue operating Central Memorial Park.
"Donations can be mailed to the Oak Hill Area Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 354, Oak Hill, Ohio 45656. Donations to the Central Memorial Park Fund are tax exempt. Donors can be kept anonymous if requested. Donations can also be taken directly to the WesBanco Main Office in Oak Hill. Please tell the cashier that you want to donate to the Oak Hill Area Chamber of Commerce - Madison Jefferson FFA Central Memorial Park Fund.
"Questions can be directed to 740-418-3649. Thanks in advance for your continued support for Oak Hill's Central Memorial Park."
