Wellston residents who used to frequent the former Flowerland business in the downtown area are in for a big surprise as a new business with the same name and which is even housed in the store's former location has officially opened.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Wellston Flowerland was held on the morning of Saturday, Feb. 3 at the store's location of 111 East First Street. Lifelong Wellston resident and Wellston High School alum Michelle Staten Canter and her husband Alvin are co-owners of this new business and purchased the store from Ohio Valley Bank in December 2017.
Having a total of 10 years' experience in the floral business, Michelle told The Telegram that she first became acquainted with the industry approximately 25 years ago while working with a local florist and putting herself through college.
"It has been a lifelong dream to own a floral shop and circumstances have made my dream a reality," she stated.
The new Wellston Flowerland offers customers full fresh flower services (holiday, sympathy, wedding, prom, birthdays, anniversaries, get-wells, etc.), silk arrangements, green and blooming plants, inspirational throws, Bibles, wind chimes, cards, stone armory jewelry, willow tree angels, balloons, chocolates and more. Michelle stated the business has something for everyone, with new items arriving daily.
With regard to the new business recycling the Flowerland name, Michelle said, "Flowerland was the shop to go to in Wellston. Everybody remembers Flowerland and we are in its old location, so it seemed fitting."
Aside from opening the new business, the Canters are also currently looking for new businesses to rent their two empty store fronts on Ohio Ave. in Wellston. Those interested are encouraged to stop by the Flowerland shop. Though the couple's main focus has been on the flower shop as of late, Michelle told The Telegram that this spring, with help from the Wellston Main Street group, the two are planning on sprucing up the Ohio Ave. store fronts.
Overall, Michelle stated she is pleased with what has transpired in recent months and is excited for the future.
"I am very proud of what we have accomplished in the last month to improve our shop and get her ready for Valentine's Day," she said. "I have already received a tremendous amount of support from the Wellston community. So, we are looking forward to many years of service to our hometown patrons."
