7/11/2017 4:34:00 PM Holzapfel Family Clinic/Urgent Care now open in Jackson Healthcare hub replaces former Russell Family Healthcare business
Holzapfel Family Clinic/Urgent Care officially opened for business on Monday, July 10, in Jackson at 345 E. Main St. in the Brackman Plaza. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was conducted that morning to celebrate the launch of Jackson County’s newest health care business. A new healthcare option has made its way to Jackson, as Holzapfel Family Clinic/Urgent Care is officially open and treating patients of all ages. The new family clinic replaces the former Russell Family Healthcare business, located at 345 E. Main St. in Suite G of the Brackman Plaza in Jackson.
The business's owner and primary healthcare provider, Vicki Holzapfel, sat down with The Telegram on day one of operations, which was Monday, July 10.
She explained that she has been a Registered Nurse (RN) since 1983. Holzapfel obtained her Associate's Degree from Rio Grande University/Rio Grande Community College, earned her Bachelor's Degree in 1994 from Capital University in Columbus, attended grad school at Wright State University and graduated with her Master's Degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) in 2001.
Over the years, Holzapfel has held numerous positions in the healthcare field including intensive care unit (ICU) nurse, emergency room (ER) nurse, nursing management, and home health. Further, after becoming an FNP, she worked in pediatrics for 11 years through Holzer Health System, spent two years in internal medicine, and spent the last two years working in the emergency department at Adena in Chillicothe.
"I'm one of those people that have done a little bit of everything," Holzapfel said.
Just before she took the job with Adena two years ago, Holzapfel was contacted by Sherry Russell, the owner of the former Russell Family Healthcare business, which was housed where the new business is now. The two women had known each other for approximately 20 years, and had even worked together while they were both at Holzer. Russell asked Holzapfel if she would be interested in joining her at her private practice. Though she could not accept the offer at that time, Holzapfel told Russell to keep her in mind for the future.
In January 2017, Russell reached out to her once again, only this time Holzapfel accepted the offer. By April 1 of this year, she had made the move. Not long after she had joined the staff, Russell told Holzapfel that she had decided to open her own practice in Rio Grande and asked if she would be interested in buying the Jackson practice. Holzapfel told The Telegram that her husband of 40-plus years, Rex, had been urging her to start her own practice for nearly a decade, but the timing was never right. However, this time was different.
"This was just one of those things that just seemed like it fell into place," she explained.
In making the transition, Holzapfel stated that Russell had told her there was nobody she would rather leave her Jackson practice to, and said she knew her patients would "be in good hands." Those patients must have had the same sentiment, as Holzapfel Family Clinic had already seen 10 patients by 2:30 p.m. on the first day. This came as quite a pleasant surprise to Holzapfel.
"I'm just so thrilled and so surprised," she said. "I'm tickled to be back in Jackson to take care of the people in our community."
Aside from Holzapfel, the clinic also employs Office Manager Tomi Holzapfel, Medical Assistant Donna Humphreys, and Phlebotomist Katlyn Sickles. Holzapfel's daughter, Kerri White, is also lending a helping hand at the new business and has been unofficially dubbed the IT person.
Though the business has just started, plans for the future are already underway. Holzapfel told The Telegram that the clinic is poised to expand into the adjoining former office space of Zip Systems in the near future, and that fellow FNP John Arnold will be joining the staff by late July or early August. Once the move has been made into the additional office space, Holzapfel said the clinic will have at least six exam rooms.
"We're planning on being busy and staying busy," Holzapfel said.
Holzapfel Family Clinic/Urgent Care is open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon.
