Just in time for tax season, Jackson is now officially home to a new tax preparation business. Good Works Tax Service is now open at its 780 E. Main St. location inside of Sears.

The two women behind the new business, Shelly Hall and Meggan Cremeans, have over 20 years of combined experience in the field of tax preparation. After working together for nearly 11 years in a job they both admittedly love, the duo decided to venture out on their own.

"We love what we do and we felt it was time after that many years," Hall explained. "We were quite restricted where we worked before and so we thought it was time to give it a shot and go out on our own."

Upon taking that leap, various potential locations for the new business were examined. As the women were just starting out and the business's finances needed to be watched closely, Hall said working out of an existing business seemed to be the most viable option. She then reached out to her sister-in-law, Brittany Johnson, who just so happens to be the manager of Jackson's Sears store. Johnson in turn contacted the store's owner, Aaron Coole, who agreed to offer up the use of two offices in the back of the store.

Currently, Good Works Tax Service is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday by appointment. Hall told The Telegram that appointments are recommended as no wait time is required for customers, though walk-ins are accepted. She further stated the business's hours of operation are flexible and can be adjusted as needed.

"We're very people-oriented," Hall said. "We go that extra mile."

In that breath, Hall explained both she and Cremeans have gone so far as to perform tax preparations at the homes of clients who could not make the trip to their office, have given out their personal cell phone numbers to clients, and have stayed past closing time on more than a few occasions to accommodate their clients.

"Our clients are our business," Hall stated. "We try to always remember that."

Now through the end of February, customers who bring a copy of last year's tax returns to their appointment at Good Works will be entered into a drawing. What's more, referring a friend to the business will earn customers an additional entry. Though the drawing's prize is still being hashed out, Hall did say a tablet or a television are good possibilities. She also explained the business may have smaller drawings through the end of tax season.

All active military members in possession of a W-2 that verifies their active status will be charged only $50 for tax services. Service fees for any and all customers are able to be deducted from their tax refunds, which equates to no up-front costs. Tax refunds through Good Works will be available via a paper check, direct deposit, or a NetSpend card. Customers will also be able to apply for a cash advance from their refund of up to $1,200 depending on their refund amount. These advances can be made within 24 hours.

"This is peoples' money," Hall said. "They have to have it. So, we try to make our pricing fair to where we can cover our living expenses while also keeping in mind the fact that they need every dime also."

Any customers wishing to skip their in-person appointment all together can do so by utilizing the TaxesToGo mobile app. Hall explained those wishing to do so can simply take a photo of their driver's license and tax documents, along with a selfie to match with the photo on the driver's license, and the app will send the information to Good Works.

From there, Hall or Cremeans will prepare the return and send it back to the customer through the app.

The availability of this and other options is one of the reasons why Hall stated the new business's unofficial slogan is, "Relax...we got this."

The experience level and dedication of these two women are unbelievable. I have been able to personally see these women work, and I would recommend them to anyone, no matter how difficult the situation is. It's awesome to see the love they have for their work and customers, and it shows with how devoted they are with making things as easy and profitable for the customers as possible. The really cool part is that the customers they have worked with love them just as much! I hope to see them thrive in their new business. These two women deserve it! Good luck Shellie and Meggan!
