First-graders at Vinton County South Elementary are currently involved in a project which will aid the less fortunate, help develop their entrepreneurial and marketing skills, and also improve their personal fitness.
South Elementary teachers Kristeen Rose and Becky Haynes are organizing the community-service project which is being billed as "First-Grade Giving Feet." It's a play on words as the goal is to generate and collect donations of new or gently used shoes for women and children. The women's shoes will go to the Shepherd's House shelter in McArthur while the children's shoes will be for the less fortunate students at the school.
Rose says the project is in conjunction with the Vinton County School District's emphasis on helping to develop students' entrepreneurial skills which will help them in their adult lives. Rose and Hughes opted to apply a social service aspect to this by coming up with a project in which the school and students can also give something back to the community.
While the shoe collection drive is already underway, the main fund-raising event will be a Walk-A-Thon conducted by the first-grade students at the school on Friday, April 20 from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. Students will be seeking financial pledges from donors with the money going to purchase new and gently used shoes. The public is invited to attend and healthy snacks and water will be available.
The three students collecting the highest amount of pledges will receive trophies, which are being sponsored by Tiffany T's of Jackson, and all students will be presented a participation ribbon.
Those who wish to donate may also drop off shoes at collection bins which are at South Elementary, the Wellston Church of the Nazarene on State Route 93, and the First Church of God in Chillicothe.
