Not surprisingly, the Viking Nation flooded into the Ohio University Convocation Center for last Thursday night’s Division II District Tournament semi-final contest against the Fairland Dragons. Vikings’ head coach Matt Combs directed his team to a 16-8 record in the 2017-2018 season and along the way, racked up his 300th career victory. The Vikings also won another Tri-Valley Conference, Ohio Division title and a Sectional Tournament championship as well.
It was "March Madness" at its finest at Ohio University's Convocation Center in Athens as for the third consecutive year, the Vinton County Viking Nation showed up in large numbers to support their boys' basketball team last Thursday evening, March 1.
Over the past several years, the Vikings have made The Convo a second home as they have won some amazing post-season games. This year, however, the Vikings were unable to extend their season, as they lost 64-45 to the highly touted Fairland Dragons in a Division II District Tournament semi-final game.
Even with the loss, the Vikings finished the season with a 16-8 mark and will now have to say goodbye to several fine senior players: Nevin Yates, Jake Speakman, Cameron Hammon, Bryce Damron, Shawn McCarty, Noah Waddell, and Bailey Bartoe. The Vikings' cheerleaders were on hand as well to lead the spirited student section. After the game, Viking Head Coach Matt Combs said he was proud of this group. Veteran Vikings' broadcaster Bob Grillo told Combs during the post-game interview, he thought it was his best year of coaching.
"I am proud of our seniors," said Combs. "Nothing about this year was easy but we worked hard and turned in a good season." The coach is looking forward to next season as some key players return and will be joined by younger players who will step up to take on more important roles.
