To The Editor:
The late George Lash of Vinton County was a wonderful person and we will miss him. I'm not sure folks know what a skilled conservationist he was. We spent many days together helping farmers and landowners with agriculture production and conservation programs.
I particularly remember the introduction of conservation no-tillage forage and corn to reduce erosion and the need to plow. Contour strip farming was also important, as was trash-mulch forage seedings. Working with ASCS to build livestock corrals helped sort and manage cattle as well as improve health care management; another project.
Working with the Current Agricultural Use Value (CAUV) calculations helped keep farm fields taxed in line with farmland production levels, rather than inflated real estate values, lessening the tax burden for many farmers even through today. And, as much as anything, he and his family were just nice people to be around.
And as the poet has said, "Perhaps that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence."
