JACKSON - The Jackson Ironladies celebrated Senior Night Thursday with a 25-22, 25-8, 25-20 straight-set win over the Southern Tornados in a non-conference volleyball match at Jackson High School.
Before the contest, Jackson High seniors Reaghann Folden, Olivia Lanning, Skylar Jarvis, Emma Stroth, and Gracie Walburn were honored for their efforts and dedication to the program.
It was this kind of commitment, head coach Jay Martin commented on after the match.
"We got off to a rough start this season, and we could have quit," said Martin, who is in his ninth year as the head coach at Jackson. "The key to our upswing at the end of the year has been the heart and dedication the players have shown."
It is the seniors, who have led the way because they have displayed that exceptionally well.
The Ironladies concluded the season with an 11-11 mark and will begin preparing for the tough assignment of playing the Gallia Academy Blue Angels in a sectional semifinal contest on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Martin was disappointed the Ironladies did not get a home match after the drawing, but he is anxious to enter tournament play.
"We talked about the sectionals before the game," said Martin. "Anything can happen on any given day."
Against Southern, the Ironladies played well and hit the ball hard. In the first set, Southern set the early tempo, but Jackson took a 13-12 lead on a kill by Holly Sexton. The score remained close, with the score tied at 21-21, before the Ironladies rallied to close out the win with a service ace by Gracie Walburn on match point.
In the second set, Jackson bolted out to a big lead and never trailed. They went on to take an easy 25-8 win and then, pulled out a hard-fought 25-20 victory in the third set.
It was a big night for several Ironladies in their home finale. Abbey Munn paced Jackson with six kills, while Sexton had five. Reaghann Folden, who had two kills, had three of the Ironladies seven aces while Emma Stroth led the defense with 21 digs.
