BOYS GOLF: Season ends at district tournament for Ironmen golf team

Sports Editor

ZANESVILLE - The Jackson boys' golf team saw its season end on Tuesday at the Division I boys' district tournament at Eagle Sticks Golf Course in Zanesville.

The top team from the eight team-field, along with the top individual not on the qualifying team advanced to the state tournament next week.

Dover shot 328 to win the team title and advance to the NorthStar Golf Club on the campus of The Ohio State University for the state tournament next week, while Maysville's Luke Morrow, who was low-medalist after shooting 37-36-73, was the individual qualifier.

"It was wet, and the rules were amended to lift clean and place everywhere," said Jackson head coach Kevin Bowman. "We got off to a slow start today. We are usually a good morning team, but after a two and one-half hour bus ride, we were a little sluggish.

"Ethan (Mercer), Trase (Speakman), and Aidan (Massie) all played well on the back, but the damage had already been done. As they made the turn, all of them said the same thing, "I'm not going to shoot over 90", and none of them did. It would have been easy after the front to check out and keep on hacking, but they all hit reset and played the way they are capable of playing on the back. The greens were fast. If you got above the hole, it almost guaranteed a three-putt. Overall, it was a good season for the team. We had a second-place league finish and a trip to the districts."

Jackson shot 369 overall, good for seventh in the team standings. The Ironmen fell short of having anyone qualify for the state tournament in the individual portion of the match as well.

Mercer was the Ironmen's top finisher after shooting 48-40 88 to tie with two other individuals for a 20-place tie. Speakman and Massie both shot 48-41 89 to finish in a five-way tie for 23rd in the standings. Caleb Rose rounded out the scoring for Jackson after firing a 58-51 109 to finish in a tie for 40th. Also, Cooper Donaldson finished in 43rd-place after shooting 58-51 109.

Mercer, Massie, and Donaldson are the three seniors in the group for the Ironmen, and Coach Bowman said he hated to see them finish.

"I couldn't have asked for better leaders," he said. "Ethan was the golf guru to everyone, working on swings and trying to make the team better. Aidan was our heart, pushing to win and keeping everyone focused on our goals. In addition, Cooper was our personality, keeping things light, and getting along with everyone to make us a team of 12, not just five or six. Trace and Carson have a lot of shoes to fill next year."
